Mac Wi-Fi Keeps Disconnecting? Fixes That Work

Your Mac's Wi-Fi drops every few minutes or hours. Most cases come down to signal, roaming between saved networks, interference or power settings.

Wi-Fi on your Mac keeps dropping and reconnecting, interrupting calls, downloads and remote sessions.

  • The Wi-Fi icon briefly shows disconnected, then reconnects.
  • Calls freeze and resume; downloads fail partway.
  • It happens more in certain rooms or at certain times.

Quick fix

Hold Option and click the Wi-Fi icon. Check RSSI (signal, closer to 0 is better: −50 is great, below −70 is weak) and Noise. If the signal is weak, move closer or add a mesh point. Then remove old saved networks in System Settings › Wi-Fi so the Mac stops hopping between them.

Why it happens

Weak signal at the edge of the router's range. Most likely
The Mac switches between saved networks or bands. Most likely
Interference on a crowded channel (apartments, 2.4 GHz).Sometimes
Router firmware bugs or overheating.Sometimes
VPN or network extensions reconnecting.Rarely

Fixes

  1. Stop the Mac from hopping networks

    1. System Settings › Wi-Fi › Advanced: remove networks you no longer use.
    2. Turn off Auto-Join for neighbouring or weaker networks in their Details.
  2. Improve the signal

    1. Move the router higher and away from metal and microwaves; add a mesh node for far rooms.
    2. Prefer 5 GHz or 6 GHz near the router; 2.4 GHz reaches further but is more crowded.
  3. Change the channel

    1. Wireless Diagnostics › Window › Scan shows nearby networks and the best channels; set the router to a less crowded one.
  4. Update and restart the router

    1. Install firmware updates and restart it; check it isn't overheating.
  5. Check for software that resets the network

    1. VPNs, network extensions and virtualization tools can drop connections; test without them.

Still not working?

Record the drops with Wireless Diagnostics (Option-click Wi-Fi › Open Wireless Diagnostics › Monitor my Wi-Fi connection). Its report shows whether drops come from signal, the router or the Mac, which helps if you contact Apple or your ISP.

See it in the app

LightAtom's connections view shows connections dropping and reconnecting each time Wi-Fi blips, so you can line drops up with what you were doing.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Mac keep disconnecting from Wi-Fi?

Most often weak signal, switching between saved networks, interference or router problems. Check RSSI with Option-click on the Wi-Fi icon to see if signal is the cause.

What is a good RSSI on a Mac?

−30 to −60 dBm is strong, −60 to −70 is usable, below −70 is weak and below −80 drops often. Noise should be well below the signal, for example −90.

Can sleep settings cause Wi-Fi drops?

Wi-Fi reconnects after sleep, which can look like drops. On desktops, check System Settings › Energy for Wake for network access if remote access matters.
