ERR_CACHE_MISS: How to Fix It

Chrome needs data you submitted earlier (usually a form) to show this page again and won't resend it without asking. Reloading and confirming usually fixes it.

ERR_CACHE_MISS

The page you went back to was the result of a form submission. Chrome doesn't have a copy cached and won't silently send the form again, so it shows this error.

Quick checks

  • Did you press Back after submitting a form (checkout, login, search)? Then this is expected.
  • Press reload and choose to resubmit only if repeating the action is safe (not a payment).

Fixes on Mac

  1. Reload and confirm

    1. Press ⌘R. Chrome asks to “Confirm Form Resubmission”; continue only if sending the form again is harmless.
    2. For payments or orders, don't resubmit: check your email or account for confirmation instead.
  2. Clear cached files for the site

    1. Chrome › Settings › Privacy and security › Delete browsing data, tick Cached images and files, and delete.
  3. Disable extensions

    1. Open the page in a private window (⌘⇧N). If it works, turn off extensions one by one at chrome://extensions.

Fixes on Windows

  1. Reload and clear the cache

    1. Press F5 and confirm resubmission if safe.
    2. Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete, choose Cached images and files, and delete.
  2. Reset network settings if it happens everywhere

    1. Run ipconfig /flushdns and netsh winsock reset as administrator.

Other devices

  1. Android apps (WebView)

    1. In apps that show web pages, ERR_CACHE_MISS can appear when the app lacks network permission or sets an offline cache mode; update or reinstall the app.

Still not working?

Developers: use the Post/Redirect/Get pattern: after handling a POST, redirect (303) to a GET page, so Back and Reload never resubmit. In Android WebView apps, declare the INTERNET permission and don't force LOAD_CACHE_ONLY unless you mean to.

Frequently asked questions

What does ERR_CACHE_MISS mean?

Chrome can't show the page from its cache and would need to resend data you submitted, such as a form. It asks first so you don't accidentally repeat an action.

Is it safe to resubmit the form?

For searches and filters, yes. For payments, orders or messages, resubmitting can repeat the action. Check whether the first one went through instead.

How do developers prevent ERR_CACHE_MISS?

Redirect after a POST (Post/Redirect/Get) so the final page is a plain GET that can be reloaded freely.

Why does ERR_CACHE_MISS appear in an Android app?

Apps that embed web pages (WebView) show it when they lack internet permission or are set to load only from cache. It's a bug in the app.
