Sidecar Not Working: Fixes for Mac and iPad

Sidecar uses an iPad as a second Mac display. It needs supported models, the same Apple Account, Handoff, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, or a cable.

The iPad doesn't appear as a display option, or Sidecar disconnects.

  • The iPad isn't listed under Displays.
  • The connection drops or lags.

Quick fix

Connect the iPad with a USB cable, then choose it in System Settings › Displays (+ button) or in Control Center › Screen Mirroring. If it works wired, the wireless requirements (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Handoff, Apple Account) are the problem.

Why it happens

Unsupported Mac or iPad model.Sometimes
Different Apple Accounts or Handoff off. Most likely
Personal Hotspot or Internet Sharing on.Sometimes
Devices too far apart (more than about 10 metres).Sometimes

Fixes

  1. Check compatibility

    1. Sidecar needs macOS Catalina or later on a supported Mac and iPadOS 13 or later on a supported iPad.
  2. Match accounts and Handoff

    1. Same Apple Account with two-factor authentication; Handoff on both.
  3. Fix the wireless link

    1. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on; turn off iPad cellular sharing and Mac Internet Sharing.
  4. Use a cable

    1. A USB connection is more stable and charges the iPad.

Still not working?

If the iPad never appears even with a cable, update both devices and sign out of the Apple Account on the iPad and back in.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my iPad connect to Sidecar?

Check the models are supported, both use the same Apple Account with Handoff on, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on. Try a USB cable to isolate wireless problems.

Does Sidecar work without Wi-Fi?

Yes, with a USB cable. Wirelessly, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on, but no network is required.

How far can the iPad be from the Mac?

Apple says within 10 metres (30 feet) for wireless Sidecar.
