"Unidentified Network": How to Fix It

Windows can't identify the network it's connected to, usually because it has no valid address or can't reach the default gateway.

Windows shows “Unidentified network, No Internet access”, or the troubleshooter reports “The default gateway is not available”.

  • “Unidentified network” in network settings.
  • No internet over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • The troubleshooter mentions the default gateway.

Quick fix

Restart the router and PC, then run ipconfig in Command Prompt. If the Default Gateway is empty or the IPv4 address starts with 169.254, run ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew as administrator.

Why it happens

No address from DHCP (169.254.x.x).Most likely
Wrong static IP or gateway settings.Sometimes
Adapter power saving turning the adapter off (default gateway not available).Sometimes
Virtual adapters from VPNs or VMs confusing network detection.Rarely

Fixes

  1. Renew the configuration

    1. ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, ipconfig /flushdns as administrator.
  2. Use automatic settings

    1. Settings › Network & internet › your connection › IP assignment: Automatic (DHCP).
  3. Stop the adapter from sleeping

    1. Device Manager › Network adapters › your adapter › Properties › Power Management: untick “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.
  4. Reset the network

    1. Settings › Network & internet › Advanced network settings › Network reset.
  5. On a Mac

    1. Check System Settings › Network › Details › TCP/IP: the Router field is your default gateway. If it's empty, renew the DHCP lease.

Still not working?

If the gateway is set but unreachable (ping to it fails), the problem is the link to the router: cable, Wi-Fi signal or the router itself.

See it in the app

On a Mac, LightAtom's connections view shows connections to your router and beyond once the gateway works again.

Frequently asked questions

What is an unidentified network?

A network Windows can't recognise, usually because the PC lacks a valid IP address or default gateway, so it can't confirm internet access.

What does “default gateway is not available” mean?

Windows can't reach the router it uses to get to other networks. Often the adapter went to sleep or the connection dropped.

What is a default gateway?

The router that forwards your traffic to other networks, including the internet. On home networks it's your router, often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
