Fixes
Check the basics
- Apple's System Status page (apple.com/support/systemstatus) shows App Store outages.
- System Settings › General › Date & Time: set automatically.
Remove what's in the way
- Disconnect VPNs and turn off proxies (System Settings › Network › Details › Proxies).
- Pause DNS-level blockers (Pi-hole, NextDNS, AdGuard) or allow Apple domains such as apple.com and mzstatic.com.
- Allow App Store and its helper processes in third-party firewalls.
Reset DNS
- Flush:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder. - Try public DNS (1.1.1.1) in System Settings › Network › Details › DNS.
- Flush:
Sign out and back in
- App Store › Store › Sign Out, quit, reopen and sign in.
Still not working?
If nothing helps, try another network (a phone hotspot) to rule out your network, and another user account to rule out your settings. If it works elsewhere, look at the router's filtering.
See it in the app
LightAtom's connections view shows the App Store and its helper processes (like storedownloadd) and whether their connections succeed.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't my Mac connect to the App Store but the internet works?
Something blocks or breaks connections to Apple's store servers: a VPN or proxy, a DNS blocker, a wrong clock, or an Apple outage.
Do firewalls like Little Snitch block the App Store?
They can if a rule denies the App Store or its helper processes. Check the app's rules for App Store, storedownloadd and related services.
Does resetting the Mac fix App Store errors?
Rarely needed. Fixing the clock, removing VPNs and filters, and signing out and in solve most cases.
